Basic Kit
Do you have sufficient food, water and other necessities at home to take care of yourself for
72 hours? Here's a shopping list that may be of help:
- Water - 2 to 4 litres of water/person/day (Remember: water is needed for drinking, cooking & cleaning). Include some small bottles that can be transported easily in case of evacuation.
- Food - non-perishable - consider canned and dried foods, energy bars, etc.
Water & food should be stored in a dry place and replaced once a year
- Can opener (manual)
- Flashlight & batteries
- Radio - battery operated or crank radio
- First Aid Kit
- Cash - small bills & loose change
- Keys - extra set of house & car keys
- Special needs items
- Important papers/documents
- Personal hygiene items (toilet paper, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, hand sanitizer)
- Medication
- Change of clothing & footware
- Sleeping bag or blanket
- Small fuel-driven stove & fuel (Follow manufacturer's instructions regarding storage & use and remember to NEVER use inside the house!)
- Garbage bags
- Safety gloves
- Tools
- Whistle (to attract attention)
