Downtown Port Perry Heritage Conservation District Study

The Township of Scugog has been considering the introduction of a Heritage Conservation District (HCD) for the Downtown Port Perry area. A HCD comprises an area with a group of buildings and properties that possess a concentration of heritage resources with special character or historical association that distinguishes it from its surroundings.

If the HCD designation by-law is enacted, most external alterations and additions, new construction and building demolition within the district area will require permission from the Township.

2008 Lake Scugog Conference

The Lake Scugog Conference was held May 8, 2008 with representatives from several Government Agencies (Federal, Provincial and Municipal) as well as Local Groups and individuals in attendance. It was an important opportunity to have all the stakeholders at the conference informing each other on their initiatives currently underway and sharing their perspectives on the resource.

Together, we accomplished our goals of having a greater understanding of the roles and responsibilities of each stakeholder and developed a sense of the actions that are required to fix the lake.

Municipal Performance Measurements

The Municipal Performance Measurement Program (MPMP) is an initiative of the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing which requires all municipalities to begin collecting data, measuring and reporting their performance in core municipal areas.

Comparisons between municipalities should be approached with an understanding that a higher or lower number does not necessarily indicate better or worse performance. Many factors including: environmental issues, geographic issues (such as the balance of rural and urban), accounting methods and allocation of corporate cost and overhead methods can affect the results for each municipality.

Urban Design Guidelines

The Township of Scugog is committed to improving, enhancing and preserving the historical aspect of our downtown core. To do so, in 1992, the Township adopted the Urban Design Guidelines to address certain issues, in particular, parking, signage, design continuity and pedestrian orientation.

These guidelines are used as a planning guide and are utilized as a complement to the Official Plan, Zoning By-Law and the Site Plan Control process.
