Vikings: Master Mariners, Traders, Colonists and Artisans

Legends and lore abound about the Vikings, mythical traders, fierce explorers and adventurers from Scandinavia who roamed the high seas from the eighth through the tenth centuries. But who were these people and what were they really like? Were they merely plunderers and warriors, or more? The Vikings: Master Mariners, Traders, Colonists and Artisans, a travelling exhibit developed by The Manitoba Museum, presents an overview of the traditional life and outstanding contributions of the Vikings. Original and reproduction artefacts from several excavated Viking sites, along with photographs, text and illustrations bring this vibrant story to life The Scugog Shores Heritage Centre & Archives is located at 1655 Reach Street, Port Perry (inside the arena). Hours are Tuesday, Thursday – Sunday from 11 am – 4 pm and Wednesday from 11 am – 8 pm. Admission is $7.00 for adults, $3 for children 5-12 and free... read more

Face to Face with the Vikings

Face to Face with the Vikings Meet the Vikings up close at our special Vikings day. Torvik, a group dedicated to living and experiencing the history of the Viking age, will set up a recreation medieval village with crafts people demonstrating naalbinding (a precursor of knitting), tablet weaving, medieval cooking and blacksmithing. Viking weapons and combat tactics will be displayed with a chance for children to participate in a real Vikings battle. Other activities for children will include writing their name in Runes, the traditional Vikings alphabet, illustrating traditional Norse fairytales and playing Hneftafl. Admission Face to Face with the Vikings is $7.00 for adults, $3.00 for children (ages 5-12) and free for children under 5. Admission includes entry to the exhibit. The Heritage Centre is located at 1655 Reach St., Port Perry, inside the Scugog Arena. read more
