The Youth of Scugog - Investing in Our Future

"We cannot always build the future for our youth but we can build our youth for the future". - Benjamin Franklin

The youth of Scugog are our future and this web-page is an opportunity to engage them more in our community. In February of 2007, Scugog determined to be more "Youth Friendly" and began the process to include our youth voices in the areas of sport, civic engagement, arts & culture and recreation.

To this end, the Mayor's Youth Task Force was formed with the assistance of the Durham Board of Education. This Task Force now meets three times per school year to discuss matters of interest to our Youth. It includes the principal and a student from each grade starting with Grade 6 from each school. In 2008, representatives were added from the Durham Separate School Board and the Christian School.

Helping youth find the means to feel better and engage more fully in a community, costs no more but can result in substantial savings. How do we get there?

  • Adopt positive youth development policies
  • Minimize user fees
  • Increase youth friendly spaces that realize play is important to all ages including adolescents.
We invite our youth to join with us in creating their community of the future. Join a local board as a youth representative - be heard. Give us your ideas and we will share them with others. A community that supports and encourages their young people is one that will be healthier, more competitive and a great place to live, work and play.

If you have any ideas on how Youth can contribute to our community, e-mail them to to: parksrec&culture@scugog.ca
